The Schoolcraft County Jail allows inmates to make commissary orders every day of the week. The jail seeks to keep employees and inmates safe by providing humane conditions. During initial booking, inmates receive a classification as either maximum, medium, or minimum-level security. In the initial booking process, a classification interview is conducted in which an inmate is evaluated based on their charges, behaviors, and previous convictions. Inmates are served three meals a day morning, noon, and night. The Schoolcraft County Jail offers inmates mental health and substance abuse services while incarcerated. Jail operations function 24 hours, 7 days a week. Mugshots are not available for arrested offenders.

How to Send Mail or Package

Pre-stamped postcards are the only acceptable form of written communication at the Schoolcraft County Jail. Postcards can be 5×7 maximum. Postcards with any inappropriate materials or any other forms of written communication will be forwarded back to the sender. Mail may not contain any glitter, marker, crayon, or other banned substances. Mail is received at the jail Monday through Fridays via USPS. To deposit funds into an inmate’s account, family and friends may use the kiosks available in the jail lobby, which are open 24/7.

Visitation Hours

Visitation is available through appointment only, and appointments must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Visits take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8 am to 9 pm. Inmates are permitted two 30 minute visits per week. Appropriate attire must be worn during visits, and all parties must obey facility rules during the visit. Failure to obey rules will result in the visit ending prematurely, and visitation privileges being suspended.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Is an act that permits all persons, except those incarcerated, access to government records; this includes information on the affairs of the public agencies and their employees. To submit an FOIA request, one can obtain a copy of the FOIA request form from www.schoolcraftcounty.net or submit a written request in another form of writing (letter, email, fax). Requests may also be made verbally. If a request is denied, a reason for the denial will be provided, and the requester will have the opportunity to appeal the denial. The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office will issue a response to the FOIA request within 5 business days. Each request must contain sufficient information to locate the record in question. The requester will assume the cost of labor associated with locating and transmitting the record. A request for discount may be made if the requester claims indigence or works for a non-profit organization.
