Houghton County Jail Information and Inmate Search

The Houghton County Jail system includes a Corrections Facility and a Work Camp. The Corrections Facility is located in the rear of the local Sheriff’s Office and as a 28 bed capacity. When space is available, the Facility provides housing for the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office and KBIC Tribal Court. The Houghton County Work Camp is a 26 bed minimum security facility located on the County Airport property. It is an open bunk dormitory where inmates are responsible for their own laundry and cleaning. The camp is for inmates approved by the Jail Administrator or Sheriff to be released to continue their employment. Only non-violent offenders are eligible and a contract with the employer is required. Inmates are responsible for their own transportation and the program costs $105 per week. Juveniles are not housed at either facility.

The jail roster of all Michigan county jails may be searched at VineLink’s website. Rosters may be searched using an inmate’s full or partial name, ID number, or case number. Information includes the inmate’s name, demographic information, custody status and detail, booking and release dates, charges, and mugshot, when available.

How to Send Mail or Package

Money may be added to an inmate’s account in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, which accepts cash, credit cards, debit cards, and checks. Funds may also be added through Allpaid’s website using the code PLC #1364. The public can also add funds directly to an inmate’s AxxS Tablets account. These tablets provide entertainment and educational services and are operated by InmateSales.

Visitation Hours

The Houghton County Corrections Facility provides inmates with 24-7 remote video visitation.Visits are free on Saturdays and Sundays. The facility does not offer in person visitation. Remote visits may be scheduled and paid for at the InmateSales website. Setting up an account requires an email address, photo ID, and internet-enabled device (i.e. computer, smart phone, tablet) with a webcam.

The Work Camp provides in-person visitation on weekends between 1pm and 4:30pm. These visits are scheduled by the inmate.

Houghton County Sheriff Information

The Houghton County Corrections Facility and Work Camp are operated by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. Joshua B. Saaranen is the current Sheriff. He has worked with the office since 2007 and was appointed to his current position in 2021. The Undersheriff is Jon Giachino, who has worked for the Office since 2010. Captain Doug Hebner is the other member of the Command Staff. He has been a corrections officer for 19 years and is the current Jail Administrator.

Houghton County Public Records Information

Requests may be made by the public for records from the Sheriff’s Office in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). An online request form is available on the Sheriff’s Office website. The name and contact information of the requestor and a detailed description of the records are required. There are fees associated with FOIA requests, including any printing and/or mailing costs and labor costs billed in 15 minute increments.
