Benzie County Jail Information
The first Benzie County Jail was adjacent to the Sheriff’s home between 1908 and 1916. New jails were built in 1916 and again in 1959. From the 1970s through the 1990s, the jail was frequently understaffed and overcrowded. The current facility was constructed in 1991 and located to the southwest of the Benzie County Government Center in Beulah. It covers around 19,000 square feet and also houses the Sheriff’s Office. It has a maximum capacity of 47 inmates. At its opening, it was the smallest Direct Supervision Jail in the United States.

How to Send Mail or Package
Inmates may receive mail from the public. Only standard-size white postcards are accepted. All other incoming mail (envelopes, packages, periodicals, etc.) are not permitted. Stamps are not allowed and will be removed from all incoming mail. Picture postcards are not allowed, but inmates who have been detailed for 30 or more days may relieve a limited number of family photos through the Sheriff’s office.
Money may be added to an inmate’s account through the Stellar ATM kiosk in the jail lobby or online at JailATM. The kiosk accepts cash and credit/debit cards. All money must be deposited by 6pm each Monday evening for an inmate to make commissary orders.
