Charlevoix County Jail Information and Inmate Search

The Charlevoix County Jail is located in Charlevoix, Michigan and administered by the local Sheriff’s Office. In 2010, the Sheriff’s office began a garden to grow food for inmates in 2010. Inmates weed, water, and tend the crops. In 2021, the garden provided 18,945.44 pounds of produce consumed at the jail.

How to Send Mail or Package

Inmates may receive personal mail. No messages, drawings, etc. may be on the outside of envelopes sent to inmates. Photos may not be polaroids or depict lewd images. All books, periodicals, and other reading materials must be shipped directly from the publisher. Mail should be addressed to:

Money may be deposited to an inmate’s account online or through the deposit kiosk in the main lobby of the jail. The kiosk accepts cash or debit/credit cards and is accessible 24 hours a day. There is a $2 ATM fee for each cash deposit and a 10% fee for each debit/credit card deposit. Funds may be added to an inmate’s account online through JailATM.

Visitation Hours

Visitation hours are Wednesday through Monday (no Tuesdays) from 10am to noon, 1pm to 5pm, and 6pm to 8pm. Visits last 20 minutes. All visitors must be at least 17 years old, provide photo ID, and be on the inmate’s visitor list. Children or siblings of inmates who are under 17 are allowed to be added to the visitor list, but must be supervised by an adult. Up to 3 people can visit an inmate at one time.

Charlevoix County Sheriff Information

The Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office administers the County Jail. Their office is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and the jail is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The current Sheriff is Charles Vondra. The Undersheriff is Todd Reeves and the Jail Lieutenant is Derek Gaylord.

Charlevoix County is located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. It is the fourth smallest county in Michigan by land area. The county’s total area is 1,390 square miles, only 416 of which are land. The county is bisected by Michigan’s third largest inland lake, Lake Charlevoix, and includes Beaver Island, the largest island in Lake Michigan. Charlevoix is the county seat and Boyne City is the largest city. According to the 2020 Census, the population is 26,054.

Charlevoix County Public Records Information

The Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office provides an online portal for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for public records. The form requires contact information for the requester, their relationship with the incident or persons involved in the incident, and a detailed description of the record being requested. The fee for records is based on labor costs billed in 15 minute increments.
