The Leelanau county jail operates 24/7, 365 days a year and has a staff of 12 certified corrections officers and 4 sergeants. Corrections officers are trained to use firearms, pepper spray, defense tactics, and tasers. They have the responsibility of transporting inmates to other jurisdictions and state prisons. The jail seeks to uphold appropriate safety, security, and sanitation standards. The operations of the jail are conducted in compliance with State and Federal laws. Mugshots are not available for offenders.

How to Send Mail or Package

Money can be deposited into an inmate’s account by mail or online. Money must be deposited in the form of cash, money order, or certified check. Items that can be mailed to inmates include letters, money orders, cards, photographs, religious tracts, and newspapers.

Visitation Hours

Leelanau County Jail offers video visitation both remotely and on-site. Visitors must set up an account online prior to visitation. Remote visits can take place Monday through Sunday 7 am to 11:59 pm. On-site video visits are permitted Wednesdays from 1 pm to 8 pm. Inmates deemed “inmate workers” are afforded an extra on-site visiting day on Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Inmates are limited to one visit a day lasting over half an hour.

Additional Jail Information

Inmates are required to pay a housing fee once they have been sentenced. The housing fees are $40 for the first day, and $15 per day thereafter. Inmates granted work release pay the same initial $40 for the first day and $20 per day thereafter. Inmates designated with an “inmate worker” status are exempt from paying housing fees. Other than the work release and inmate worker programs, inmates are also able to enroll in GED, life skills, and religious programs.

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office operates its own jail. The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office operate a drug disposal drop-off box located in the lobby of the office. It is available 24/7, completely anonymous, and individuals are able to deposit any unwanted controlled substance, prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and ointments.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) grants citizens the right to access public records of government agencies; this includes records on the happenings of the government and those who work within the government. The FOIA form and instructions on how to complete it are available online. Photo copies cost 10 cents per piece. FOIA forms require the individual to input their name, address, and contact information. The incident in question must be adequately described by the individual submitting the forms. Forms can be submitted in-person at the administration office or through the mail. Processing usually takes 5 to 10 business days.
