The Missaukee County Jail provides basic human needs in terms of food, shelter, and clothing. Inmates are classified as either maximum, medium, or minimum-level security. Classification is determined during the initial booking process and considers such factors as an inmate’s current charges and previous convictions. Inmates are served three meals a day and have the option to purchase items from the jail commissary. The Missaukee County Jail has trustee and inmate worker programs that allow eligible inmates the opportunity to reduce their sentences. Jail operations function 24 hours, 7 days a week. Mugshots are not available for arrested offenders.

How to Send Mail or Package

All mail sent to inmates must be in the form of a postcard. No inappropriate material is permitted. Mail with inappropriate material or mail that is sprayed with perfume will be sent back to the original sender. Money can be deposited into an inmate’s account using the website www.jailatm.com. The kiosk at the Sheriff’s Office also offers an alternative for depositing funds into an inmate’s commissary account. Commissary includes items like candy, coffee, stationary, and playing cards. Once an inmate is released, they will be issued a check for the remaining balance of their account minus the amount owed to the jail for processing fees.

Visitation Hours

The visitation hours at the Missaukee County Jail are Tuesdays 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 and 1:00 to 4:00. Appointments must be made by calling (231) 839-4338 ext 2 for the jail. Each inmate is permitted one 30 minute visit per week. Inmates are only allowed a maximum of two visitors at a time. Visits that disrupt the operations of the jail will be ended immediately, and those visitors will lose eligibility for future visits. Visitors must be on the inmate’s visiting list and must bring proper photo ID prior to visit. Inmates may produce a list of five names of individuals who they wish to have visit them.

Additional Jail Information

72 hours after arraignment, inmates are able to receive up to three pairs of “Whites,” or pairs of white underwear and socks. Inmates are only able to make outgoing calls and cannot receive incoming calls. Inmates have access to telephones from 8 am to 11:30 pm. Outgoing calls are made collect or by using a phone card that the inmate is able to buy through the commissary. Corrections officers will not pass information to inmates.

Missaukee County Public Records Information

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows all citizens access to government records; this includes information on the affairs of the public agencies and public employees. The Missaukee County Records Department is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. FOIA forms can be obtained from the Records Office, central dispatch, or the Missaukee Sheriff’s website. FOIA requests must include the individual’s name, address, and contact information as well as a description of the public record. A written request may also be made to the Sheriff’s office detailing the desired records. Written requests will receive a response within 5 business days. Fees associated with the FOIA request are determined by the time spent retrieving, copying, and mailing the record.
