The Montcalm County Jail was built using the latest corrections innovations. The first structure was built in 2002, and had 119 beds. Since its inception, it has undergone two renovations bringing the total number of beds to 205. The staff of the Montcalm County Jail consists of 18 corrections officers and 4 sergeants. How to Send Mail or Package

All mail sent to an inmate will be searched for contraband. Mail containing sexually inappropriate content will be placed in an inmate’s property. Legal mail will be opened in front of the inmate. Items that are permitted to be sent to the inmate include money orders, pictures, newspapers, magazines, and softcover books. Pictures must be on photo paper and can be a maximum size of 4×6 inches. Money for inmate accounts cannot be accepted at the front desk. Rather, individuals may deposit funds through the kiosk in the main lobby of the jail via cash or debit/credit card. There is also an option to pay by credit card online or by phone between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm.

Visitation Hours

All visits at the Montcalm County Jail are currently being conducted electronically. Video visits can be done onsite at the jail or remotely from a smartphone or computer. Visits are scheduled online or at the kiosk in the jail lobby, and must be scheduled at least 16 hours in advance. All visits are recorded and monitored. Failure to abide by the visitation rules can result in termination of the visit and potential disciplinary action. Each inmate is permitted two 20 minute visits onsite, and unlimited visits offsite. Each offsite visit yields a fee of $7 for 20 minutes.

Additional Jail Information

Within 72 hours after incarceration, inmates are permitted to receive care packages from family or friends containing 3 plain white shirts, pairs of underwear, and socks. Female inmates may receive the same items, but an additional 3 bras without any underwire. After 72 hours, these items must be purchased in the commissary. Care packages can be ordered online or over the phone and cost $25 each. Inmates may purchase phone minutes from the commissary. Phones are available for use from 7 am to 11:30 pm in the housing units. Inmates are charged a daily housing fee along with additional fees for any medical services rendered or property damaged while incarcerated. Failure to pay these fees within 90 days of release will result in the debt being forwarded to a collections agency.

Montcalm County Sheriff Information

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office operates and maintains its own jail for pretrial detainees and sentenced offenders. The administrative office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. The goal of the Sheriff’s Office is to protect and serve the citizens of Montcalm County. The Sheriff’s department recognizes individuals are constitutional rights that must be recognized and upheld. The Sheriff’s Office seeks to execute its duties in an ethical and honest manner.

Montcalm County Public Records Information

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows all citizens access to government records; this includes information on the affairs of government agencies and public officials. An FOIA form is available on the Sheriff’s website, however, it is not necessary to use the form as long as the request is made in writing and contains the necessary information. In the event that an FOIA request is denied, an individual has the right to file an appeal. The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office will issue a response to the FOIA request within 5 business days or less. The fee charged for the FOIA request depends on labor, costs of copying and duplication, cost of computer discs, and cost to send the record to the recipient. FOIA requests must include the individual’s name, address, and contact information.
