Oakland County Jail Information and Inmate Search

The Main Oakland County Jail was built in 1973.The second floor of the jail holds inmates designated as maximum security and has a capacity of 440 inmates. The intake area is on the first floor and consists of holding tanks and observation cells. The intake area has a capacity of 156 inmates. In 1989 an Annex for direct supervision inmates was built and can hold 487 detainees. The East Annex satellite facility has a capacity of 398 inmates. Overcrowding has been an issue, but the implementation of community corrections has helped ease the strain on the jail. Mugshots are not available for arrested offenders.

How to Send Mail or Package

Mail can be sent to inmates in one of three ways. The first method is through standard U.S. mail. Mail is not to be sent directly to the jail, but, rather, through the mail vendor Smart Communications. Legal mail can be sent directly to the jail. Lastly, inmates can receive emails through the website www.smartinmate.com. Users must make a minimum deposit of $5, and pay a one-time $1.50 setup fee. From there, users can send messages up to 30,000 characters in length for 50 cents each and $1 per photo. Money may be deposited into an inmate’s account either online or at the Visitation area of the Main Jail. To deposit money online, visit the Smart Communications website at www.smartjailmail.com. Only cash or money orders will be accepted for drop off at the Main Jail.

Visitation Hours

All visits at the Oakland County Jail are conducted through a video visitation system. Visitors may schedule their appointments by visiting www.smartjailmail.com. Inmates are permitted one free visit and one paid visit per week. Video visits can either be done remotely or at the jail. Visits must be scheduled 24 hours prior. Visits can last between 15 and 30 minutes long. The hours for professional visits are Monday through Sunday from 7:15 am to 8:45 pm. The hours for social visits are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:15 pm to 8:15 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9:!5 am to 4:15 pm.

The Corrective Services Division processes around 15,000 new arrests into the Oakland County Jail each year. The Oakland County Sheriff maintains a Most Wanted page that lists the names of several fugitives and how to contact the Sheriff’s Office should one possess information on the whereabouts of one of these fugitives. Each fugitive is given a profile showing their mugshot, name, date of birth, height, and weight. The profile goes on to describe what the individual is wanted for and possible tips about their location.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is one of the largest in the country with a staff of over 1,400 employees and an annual budget of 177 million dollars. The fee charged for FOIA requests depends upon labor costs, material costs, mail costs, and cost of making copies. Every request should include the inquirer’s name, address, and contact information.
