Berrien County Jail Information and Inmate Search

The Berrien County Jail is a facility in St. Joseph, Michigan. The current structure was built in 1958 after the previous jail, which was completed in 1896, was torn down and repurposed as a parking lot. The stated aim of the Berrien County Jail Facility Staff is providing a safe and secure environment for workers and inmates. To that end, the jail makes prevention of sexual offenses a top priority and strictly enforces all laws regarding staff or inmate sexual misconduct.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office hosts an online inmate roster that can be searched using first or last name and/or booking date. Records include the sex and birthdate of the inmate, as well as their booking date and charges. It also includes visitation information, the jail information hotline number, and a pdf copy of the Inmate Rules and Regulations manual. Mugshots are not available.

How to Send Mail or Package

Inmates may receive mail from the public, but only standard size white postcards sent via metered-postage are allowed. Absent a court order, no other mail or packages are allowed (aside from legal mail). Inmates held for 30 or more days may receive and retain up to 3 photographs obtained through the Sheriff’s office.

Money may be deposited into inmate’s commissary accounts through a kiosk in the jail lobby, a kiosk in the Niles Courthouse, or online through the Connect Network. Money orders and government and cashier checks may be sent to inmates through the mail. All money must be deposited by 11am Tuesdays to receive commissary that week.

Visitation Hours

Video visitation may be held onsite or remotely. Onsite visitation hours are 6pm to 8pm Tuesday through Friday and 12pm to 2pm Saturday and Sunday. Remote visitation hours are from 1pm to 5:30pm Monday through Friday. On weekends, remote visits can be scheduled between 9am and 10:30 am and 4pm and 8:30pm. Inmates are allowed up to 2 visits per day and 10 per week. Each inmate is allotted one free 20-minute visit per week. Other visits cost $10 for 20 minutes. Visits must be scheduled 1 day in advance and may be scheduled up to 5 in advance. They can be scheduled and paid for online. No visitors under the age of 13 are allowed and visitors between the ages of 13 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Up to 3 people may attend each visit.

The jail is administered by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office. L. Paul Bailey has been the Sheriff since 2001. Chuck Heit is the Undersheriff and Greg Sanders is the Chief Deputy. The Berrien County Sheriff website includes extensive information on the history of the Office and all previous Sheriffs, as well as notable historical incidents, such as epidemics, disasters, massacres, and jail breaks.

Berrien County Public Records Information

The public may request copies of records though Berrien County’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Request Form or via any other form of writing that describes the records being requested. The FOIA Request Form is available online. Requests may be submitted in person or by mail, email, or fax. If submitted by fax or email, “FOIA” or “FOIA Request” should appear on the fax cover page or email subject line. Cost of records include any printing and/or mailing charges and labor costs billed in 15 minute increments.
