Genesee County Jail Information and Inmate Search

Located in Flint, Michigan, the Genesee County Corrections Division includes the Genesee County Jail and Flint City Lockup. The County Jail is a direct supervision facility with 580 beds. The jail typically exceeds this capacity, with an average population of 580 to 620 inmates. The Flint City Lockup. It is a short-term linear supervision facility with a maximum capacity of 110 inmates. It has been closed and re-opened several times by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, most recently being re-opened in 2021. Agencies throughout the county lodge detainees in the Flint City Lockup due to the persistent crowding of the County Jail.

How to Send Mail or Package

Personal mail sent to inmates of the Genesee County Jail is now being handled by ViaPath Technologies. Mail will be sent to the company, which then scans and electronically delivers it to the inmate. Electronic messages (i.e. email) may be sent to inmates for a fee through ConnectNetwork’s website.

Several online companies provide packages, messaging, and other services that may be purchased for inmates of Genesee County Jail. Care packages may be purchased and sent to inmates through iCare Gift’s website. Commissary packages may be purchased and sent to inmates through TouchPay’s website. Funds may also be added to an inmate’s ConnectNetwork Debit Link account online for purchase of tablet-related items and services, such as streaming music, games and eBooks.

Visitation Hours

Visitation at Genesee County Jail is operated by ConnectNetwork GTL (recently renamed ViaPath). Both onsite and remote visits should be scheduled through the ConnectNetwork website. Visitation costs vary by facility and duration. Some may be available at no cost. These fees are disclosed when visitors schedule visits. Remote visits from mobile devices require an app download and remote visits from computers will soon also require download of VisBridge, a desktop application. Visitors should arrive or login for visits 15 minutes prior to their scheduled start time.

The Genesee County website does not include a specific page dedicated to sharing information about the County’s most wanted suspects or those with warrants out for their arrest. The Sheriff’s Office does, however, occasionally share images and descriptions of their most wanted on their social media accounts, including their Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages.

Genesee County Sheriff Information

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office operates the County Jail and the Flint City Lockup. It is Michigan’s fifth largest sheriff’s office. The staff includes Undersheriff Michael Tocarchick, Capitain of Corrections Jilian Macey, Executive Captain David Kennamer, Law Enforement Captain Jason Murphy, Paramedic Captain Richard Conkright, and Major of Operations Jason Gould. The current Sheriff is Christopher R. Swanson, who made national news when he marched with protesters in Flint following George Floyd’s death. In 2020, Sheriff Swanson started the inmate educational program IGNITE (Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education) to reduce conflicts at Genesee County Jail and improve inmates’ re-entry opportunities. IGNITE has since become a national inmate education program endorsed by the National Sheriff’s Association.

Genesee County Public Records Information

Per the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the public may request copies of records from any county office. Requests should provide a detailed description of the records requested and the requestor’s contact information. Genesee County provides a FOIA Request on their website. They ask that requests be submitted by mail or email to the contact information below, though Michigan FOIA guidelines also allow requests to be submitted in person or by fax. Requesters are responsible for associate fees for copying and/or mailing records, as well as labor costs billed in 15 minute increments.
