The jail seeks to keep employees and inmates safe by providing humane conditions. When an inmate is booked into the County Jail, they undergo a classification interview in which the inmate is classified based on their previous convictions and current charges. Inmates are then classified as either maximum, medium, or minimum-level security, and admitted into the general population. Inmates are fed three meals a day. The Shiawassee County Jail offers inmates mental health services, substance abuse services, and educational services while incarcerated. Jail operations function 24 hours, 7 days a week. Mugshots are not available for arrested offenders.

How to Send Mail or Package

Incoming mail must be in a white envelope without any lipstick, stickers, crayon, or any other alterations. Photos sent to inmates must be printed on computer paper. Inmates are not permitted to have cards, colored envelopes, hardcover books, checks, or letters with unusual odors scents to them. Inmates are not permitted to exchange mail between each other. To deposit money on an inmate’s account online, visit www.expressacount.com. Family and friends can call (866)422-6833 to deposit money over the phone. There is also a kiosk available in the jail lobby for individuals to deposit funds into an inmate’s account.

Visitation Hours

Onsite visitation takes place Monday through Friday from 9 am to 11 am and 1 pm to 4 pm. Remote visits are available Monday through Sunday from 7 am to 10 pm. All inmates are allowed visitors unless they are undergoing disciplinary action or have yet to be transferred to the general population. Visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Only individuals over the age of 18 are allowed to visit. Visits can be scheduled at www.inmatesales.com.

The Shiawassee County Jail houses individuals arrested and charged in the County Shiawassee. Inmates are able to make phone calls through www.inmatesales.com. Fund must be added to make a prepaid call. Family friends have the option of purchasing commissary items on behalf of inmates through www.canteenservices.com. Only one order may be placed per week, and only phone & web and hygiene & clothing purchases can be made.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is an act that grants all persons access to government records including information on the affairs of the government and its employees. An FOIA request form is provided on the Shiawassee County website. Individuals also have the option to submit FOIA requests in writing (email, letter, or fax), or verbally. The Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office will issue a response to the FOIA request within 5 business days. If an FOIA request is denied, an explanation for the denial will be issued, and the requester has the option to appeal the denial. FOIA requests must contain sufficient information for the county to be able to find the requested record. The requester must include his or her name, address, and contact information with each request. The fee for the FOIA request will be calculated depending on labor costs, material costs, and cost to copy/duplicate the record.
