Chippewa County Jail Information and Inmate Search

The Chippewa County Correctional Facility is located in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. It is staffed by a Jail Administrator, an Assistant Jail Administrator, a Physician, two Corporeals, two Community Service Supervisors, 12 part-time Correctional Officers, and 13 full-time Correctional Officers.

Questions concerning detainees may be directed to the jail phone 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Callers should have the individual’s name, aliases, birthday, and county of birth when making an inquiry. Michigan county jail rosters may also be searched online at VineLink. Available information includes charges, booking and release dates, and mugshots, when available.

How to Send Mail or Package

Letters to inmates should include the last four digits of the detainee’s file number and the sender’s name and address. Care packages may be purchased online from mycarepack.com.

Funds may be added to inmates’ accounts online through accesscorrections.com. Money is also accepted at the jail front office from 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday and during Saturday and Sunday visitation.

Visitation Hours

Inmates are allowed 3 weekly visits. Visits last 20 minutes and are limited to a single visitor unless otherwise approved by the jail staff. Visitors to inmates must be at least 17-years-old and have a valid photo ID. Visitation hours for inmates are staggered by gender, section, and name. The schedule is as follows.

On Wednesdays, visits are scheduled as follows: 9am-10am, males level 2; 10am-11am, males level 1; 11am-12pm, females level 2; 1pm to 2pm, females level 1; 2pm-3pm, females level 2; 3pm-4pm, females levels 6-9; and 4pm-5:50pm, males levels 6-9.

On Saturdays, visits may be scheduled at: 9am-11am for females level 3-5 with last names beginning with A-L; 11am-12pm for female youthful offenders; 1pm-4pm for males levels 3-5 with last names beginning with A-L.
On Sundays, visits may be scheduled at: 9am-11am for females level 3-5 with last names beginning with M-Z; 11am-12pm for male youthful offenders; 1pm-4pm for males levels 3-5 with last names beginning with M-Z.

Chippewa County Sheriff Information

The Chippewa County Jail is administered by the local Sheriff’s Office. Since 2016, Michael D. Bitnar has served as Chippewa County Sheriff. The Undersheriff is Larry Hough. All deputies in the office receive training in autism awareness and the office runs a Law Enforcement Autism Awareness Program, which provides stickers to be placed on residents’ cars or homes to indicate an individual with autism is present. Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office is also part of a Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team, which includes Mackinaw and Luce Counties.

Chippewa County is located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. With 2,698 square miles, it is the second-largest county in Michigan by land area and the fifth-largest by total area. It is one of two counties to contain shorelines on two Great Lakes: Lake Huron and Lake Superior. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 36,785. The county seat and largest city is Sault Ste. Marie.

Chippewa County Public Records Information

Public records may be requested from any county office via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). A FOIA Request Form can be found online, though no specific form is required to request public records. Fees for public records include any associated copying and/or mailing costs and labor costs billed at 15 minute increments. Requests may be submitted in person, by mail, or by email.
